Teacher Profile: Bilingual I Teacher Ms. Shen Tang

Hello everyone, my name is Shen Tang and I am currently teaching Bilingual I at TCLS this school year. This is my first year teaching, although I have had two years of experience being a Teacher Assistant to the 07~08 Bilingual II (now Bilingual IV) and 08~09 Bilingual II (now Bilingual III) classes. The teachers whom I've worked with provided me with great insight and useful mechanism to teaching--how to effectively engage younger students in learning a complex language. Also, I have been tutoring Chinese outside of school for two years now, which more or less helped with  teaching more formally within a classroom setting.

I was born in Shanghai and lived in Tianjin, China up until I was five. I went to Kindergarten in Boston and attended first grade at Pierce School in Brookline. When I was eight, my family moved back to Tianjin where I graduated from elementary school (completing sixth grade). Seventh and eighth grade I attended Clarke, living with my mom in the U.S. while my dad took care of my two younger brothers in China. Now my brothers are here with me and my mom, while my dad works in China and visits as often as he can.

Being a sophomore in high school, I am throughly inexperienced compared to the other teachers--most of them having taught at the school for ten, or twenty years. Although at first the classroom environment was quite nerve-wrecking, I believe that it has proved to be an exciting endeavor. Teaching Chinese to English-speakers (most of them younger than 9) is a challenge that tests my ability to use these two languages interchangeably in a effective way. I find myself often looking forward to these two hours every week, as I have quickly grown to love the kids I teach who all teach me something new every Sunday.
